Transmission systems are a complex engineering design consisting of many parts that are in constant motion. The system controls the torque and speed from the engine to the drive wheels, which fluctuates depending on the driving conditions. Whether your vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission, it is critical to keep this system well-maintained by an experienced mechanic.
Transmission systems have evolved along with the rest of automotive technology, and you’ll even find variations among a single car manufacturer. They aren’t quite as simple as manual or automatic anymore. Therefore, it’s important to know what type of transmission fluid is appropriate for your specific vehicle.
A knowledgeable mechanic will know this information and will flush the transmission fluid at scheduled mileage intervals. It’s also beneficial to have the fluid inspected for changes in color or the presence of contaminants as part of a routine maintenance program.
A low level of transmission fluid disrupts the gear shifting process, resulting in poor driving performance and premature part failure. It has many crucial roles:
● protects the gears and other moving parts from overheating
● lubricates to reduce friction that could wear down the gears
● automatic transmission systems use the fluid for hydraulic pressure in the converter
● sustains freedom of movement for the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, and gears
The components of a transmission system are in constant motion as they detach and reattach to each other in precise movements upon demand. Failures in the system make the parts susceptible to slipping out of place and overheating.
Ignoring the warning signs of a problem with your transmission could be costly, especially since many of the components are difficult to access. While adhering to a preventative maintenance schedule can keep these issues at bay, it is important to seek repairs if you notice any of these conditions:
● Slipping Gears: In an automatic vehicle, a control module sends a signal to the transmission to engage the proper gear. In a manual transmission vehicle, the driver controls the gear selection by pressing the clutch pedal and adjusting the shifter. However, repeatedly pressing the clutch pedal unnecessarily can cause heat to build up and damage the pressure plate.
Frequently pulling heavy loads with your vehicle can also overheat the gear components. With either system, the transmission should hold the proper gear and not slip out of it.
● Grinding Noises:You may slightly feel your car switching gears, but you shouldn’t hear it. If you hear a grinding noise as the gears shift it could indicate the throw-out bearing is worn or the transmission fluid is low. Promptly taking your car to a trusted mechanic is recommended.
● Difficulty Shifting Gears: The gears in your vehicle should shift smoothly when prompted. A stiff clutch or a revving engine between gears could be signaling a worn throw-out bearing or snapped clutch cable. A driver with a habit of constantly pressing and releasing the clutch pedal could cause the cables to wear out prematurely.
● Fluid Leak:That puddle under your car could be one of its many fluids. Leaking transmission fluid is usually a dark reddish or brown color and possibly has a burnt smell. Checking the seal for leaks and keeping the fluid at a proper level is part of a quality routine maintenance service. If a technician detects a leak, they will inspect the rest of the transmission system to ensure it has not sustained any damage.
Transmission repairis complicated due to the multiple possibilities for failure and difficulty accessing the necessary parts. You will want a mechanic that has detailed knowledge of the system, especially if a repair is serious enough to warrant dismantling and rebuilding the transmission.
