Things to Consider if You Find Your Car Running Out of Coolant in Green Bay

posted on

Car Low Coolant Warning

If the coolant in your car keeps running out, the major reason would be a leak in one of the components of the coolant system. The coolant is meant to flow through the engine of your vehicle and regulate the temperature of the engine. However, if it flows somewhere else for any reason and the level drops, the vehicle would begin to experience serious overheating problems and this could lead to damages to the car.

Reasons Why The Coolant Of Your Car May Run Out

  • Hole in the Radiator: Driving your car over time may lead to wearing out of parts of the car engine. If the radiator corrodes it can leak the coolant out. Wearing out of the gasket between the radiator and the tank could also cause a leak. If the hose that connects the radiator becomes brittle, the heater core, and water pump would leak as the tube would not seal properly.
  • Leaky Radiator Cap: The radiator cap helps to create a tight seal that maintains the right pressure in the radiator. If the seal or spring wears out due to overuse, the coolant may leak out of the engine.
  • Blown Head Gasket: The head gasket of your car determines how your engine performs. Its function is to regulate a wide range of temperatures. The temperatures encountered are both extremely high and very low pressure. The head gasket is located in between the engine block and the cylinder head. A leaking head gasket is said to be “blown”. A blown gasket may not be easily noticed. When the head gasket blows, it will no longer separate the engine oil and the coolant. This can lead to failure of the entire engine. The coolant will start leaking out of the engine, leading to a drop in the coolant level and eventual overheating of the vehicle.
  • Failed Water Pump:  The water pump located near the drive belt in the engine circulates the coolant through the cooling system. It is joined to the lower hose in the radiator and if the hose becomes loose or corroded, the water pump begins to leak. Any problem in the water pump will prevent the coolant from circulating properly in the cooling system. The result may be overheating of the vehicle.
  • Problem in the Expansion Tank: The expansion tank is a plastic container close to the engine that supplies the coolant to the radiator. A rubber hose connects the expansion tank to the radiator and through this hose, the radiator receives or gives out the coolant. As this tank is exposed to temperature changes over time, it becomes weak and it may crack leading to a leak which would provide an escape for the coolant. Sometimes, it might be the hose connecting the expansion tank to the radiator that may become worse and lead to a coolant leak.

Symptoms That Your Car is Running Out of Coolant

Smoking from your car hood as a result of overheating, increase in temperature gauge, decrease in the car's gas mileage, a noticeable drop in the coolant level, and a bright fluid (coolant) on the ground beneath your car are all symptoms of a coolant leak.

Once you notice any of these symptoms, it is important that you see our professional technicians, who will run diagnostics of your car to ascertain the exact cause.

How To Prevent The Coolant In Your Vehicle From Running Out

The best way to prevent coolant leaks is to regularly carry out preventive maintenance to replace old coolant so that it doesn't become sour and acidic. Loose and bad hoses can be detected and fixed while carrying out regular maintenance.
